The airport is named after I Gusti Ngurah Rai, an Indonesian National hero who led Indonesian forces in Bali against the Dutch during the Indonesian War of Independence. He was killed in action during a battle with Dutch forces on November 20, 1946 at a young age of 29.

Denpasar's high tourism ratings make it a very popular place for airlines to fly to, but not as a starting hub. Starting here is recommended for beginners as the city's lack of competition and high tourism ratings can make it a good place for any starter airline to grow quickly. In addition, the city has the ability to sustain moderate competition due to its tourism ratings. Denpasar also has significant drawbacks that players should consider. Low business ratings means that cargo operations should be avoided unless flying to large cities like Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. The low business ratings also mean that the city cannot sustain any competition for cargo routes. Furthermore, Denpasar is in a slightly isolated position in South-east Asia.
