The airport is named after I Gusti Ngurah Rai, an Indonesian National hero who led Indonesian forces in Bali against the Dutch during the Indonesian War of Independence. He was killed in action during a battle with Dutch forces on November 20, 1946 at a young age of 29.

Strategy[]

Denpasar's high tourism ratings make it a very popular place for airlines to fly to, but not as a starting hub. Starting here is recommended for beginners as the city's lack of competition and high tourism ratings can make it a good place for any starter airline to grow quickly. In addition, the city has the ability to sustain moderate competition due to its tourism ratings. Denpasar also has significant drawbacks that players should consider. Low business ratings means that cargo operations should be avoided unless flying to large cities like Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. The low business ratings also mean that the city cannot sustain any competition for cargo routes. Furthermore, Denpasar is in a slightly isolated position in South-east Asia. Although connections to the north are plentiful (i.e. Asian cites like Shanghai and Seoul), there are few great cities to the south of Denpasar. Hence, a player should consider this location carefully before making a decision to start here.

Ngurah Rai International Airport often attains a status of level 4 or 5 and rarely beyond that. This makes the principal airport a poor choice as an airport to buy over from the national government as better alternatives exist elsewhere. The lack of demand for slots in the city makes any additional airports futile. Thus, players should not contemplate about building second or third airports in this city.

Unlike most medium sized cities, large capacity passenger aircraft like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 can be used here when flying to and from large sized cites due to the city's high tourism ratings. Passenger flights to small and medium sized cities should use small and medium capacity planes like the Boeing 737, Airbus A320, Douglas DC-8 and Lockheed L-1011. Cargo planes in this city to any sized cities should be restricted to small capacity planes like the McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32F and the Boeing 737F in order to minimise the amount of empty space available in the aircraft. This will help and maintain decent profits lessen depreciation of an airline.
